EMG and nerve conduction studies
Tests of nerves and muscles for numbness, tingling, weakness and nerve pain. Done at Narayani Hospital.
What are EMG and NCS?
Nerve conduction studies (NCS) measure how well and how fast the nerves carry signals. Small sensors are placed on the skin and the nerve is stimulated with brief, mild electrical pulses, which feel like a tap or tingle.
Electromyography (EMG) records the electrical activity of muscles, usually with a fine needle placed in the muscle. It can cause brief discomfort.
Together, these tests help find out whether a problem is in the nerves, the muscles or the nerve roots near the spine, and how severe it is.
Why the tests may be advised
- Numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet (neuropathy)
- Nerve pain
- Weakness of the arms or legs
- Sciatica or cervical radiculopathy (a nerve pressed near the spine)
- Muscle weakness or myopathy, and other neuromuscular disorders
How to prepare
- No fasting is needed.
- Take your usual medicines unless the doctor has told you otherwise.
- Wear loose clothing so that the arms and legs can be reached easily.
- Bring previous reports and a list of your medicines.
Where and when
EMG and NCS are done at Narayani Hospital, Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Call 0253 2224411 to book.
