Pediatric neurology
Seizures, developmental delay and other neurological problems in children.
Neurology care for children
Dr Anand Diwan is trained in both pediatrics and neurology (DCH, DNB Pediatrics and DNB Neurology), with special interests in pediatric and developmental neurology and in epilepsy in children. He sees children with conditions of the brain, nerves and muscles at Narayani Hospital and at the Govind Nagar clinic.
When to see a pediatric neurologist
- Seizures or fits, including fits with fever and staring spells
- Developmental delay, such as delay in sitting, walking or talking
- Frequent headaches
- Weakness, unusual movements or problems with walking
- Episodes of loss of awareness or unusual behaviour
If you are worried about your child but not sure whether a neurologist is needed, call us and we will guide you.
Seizures in children
Seizures can look very different in children. Some are obvious, with shaking of the arms and legs. Others are brief staring spells that are easy to miss. A careful history, and a phone video of an episode if you can film it safely, helps a great deal. An EEG or video EEG at Narayani Hospital may be advised. See also Epilepsy.
Preparing for your child's visit
- Bring previous reports, scans and the child's vaccination or growth records if you have them.
- Bring a list of the child's medicines and doses.
- Note down when episodes happen, how long they last, and what happens before and after.
- A phone video of an episode, if you can film it safely, is very useful.
Tests for children
Not every child needs tests. When they are needed, they are done at Narayani Hospital (Mon–Sat 10:00 am – 5:00 pm). For an EEG, please wash your child's hair the evening before or on the morning of the test and do not apply oil. No fasting is needed for EEG. Our staff will tell you how to prepare for any other test.
When to get emergency help
Go straight away to the emergency department of the nearest hospital with a CT scan facility for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, sudden trouble speaking, sudden loss of vision, a sudden severe headache unlike any before, or a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes. Do not wait for an appointment.
