Understanding Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is a condition of the brain that mainly affects movement. It usually starts slowly and changes over years. Recognising the signs early, and planning care with a neurologist, can help people stay active and independent for longer. Dr Anand Diwan provides care for tremor, stiffness, slowness and other movement problems.

Spot the signs

Movement signs

• Resting tremor: shaking when the hand is at rest, often starting in one hand
• Slowness of movement: tasks like buttoning or walking become difficult and laboured
• Stiffness of the arms, legs or body
• Changes in walking, such as smaller steps

Hidden (non-motor) signs

• Acting out dreams during sleep (REM sleep behaviour disorder, RBD)
• Constipation
• Other changes, such as in sleep, mood or sense of smell

Not every tremor is Parkinson's disease. There are other causes of tremor and slowness, and a neurological examination helps tell them apart.

Preparing for your visit

• Bring a family member who sees you every day.
• Bring a list of all medicines, with the times you take them.
• A short phone video of the tremor or walking can help.
