Stroke
Assessment after a stroke or warning episode, and help to lower the risk of another.
A stroke is an emergency
If someone has sudden weakness or numbness on one side, sudden trouble speaking, or sudden loss of vision, go straight away to the emergency department of the nearest hospital with a CT scan facility. Do not wait for an appointment. Treatment works best when it is started quickly.
Recognise a stroke: BE FAST
- Balance: sudden loss of balance or coordination
- Eyes: sudden loss of vision or double vision
- Face: one side of the face droops
- Arm: one arm or leg is weak or numb
- Speech: slurred, strange or difficult speech
- Time: note the time the symptoms started and get to hospital immediately
After a stroke or a warning episode
A warning episode (transient ischaemic attack, or "mini-stroke") causes stroke-like symptoms that go away by themselves. It is still an emergency, because it can be followed by a full stroke.
Dr Anand Diwan sees patients for assessment after a stroke or warning episode, and helps to lower the risk of another. This usually includes:
- finding the likely cause of the stroke,
- reviewing blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, heart rhythm and other risk factors,
- planning medicines and lifestyle changes,
- follow-up of recovery, weakness, speech, memory or seizures after stroke.

A CT scan of the brain and blood tests can be done at Narayani Hospital. Your doctor may also advise an MRI scan or heart tests.
